Top young athletes excel in Rand West City cross country

Primary schools from across Rand West City showcased their top athletes at League 3 of the cross country competition hosted by Laerskool Rapportryer.

Laerskool Rapportryer’s sports grounds were buzzing with activity recently as several primary schools took part in the Rand West City Schools Cross Country League 3.

Primary schools competed in three leagues with Randfontein Primary School hosting the first, Laerskool Gerrit Maritz Primary School hosting the second at the Westonaria Sports Complex, followed by the third event hosted by Rapportryer.

This is according to D2 Education Department Sports Co-ordinator Denton Viljoen.

The girls’ U11 winners are Zimifa Marhsall, Remofile Mosiane and Lerato Nyathela.

Denton explained that, of these leagues, which initially started as mass participation, only 20 athletes progress to the other leagues. However, as they advance to the district level, the number decreases, and only the top 10 are selected for the district championships.

The U13 boys winners are Oarabile Motsisi, Sbusiso Sambo and Katlego Ramule.

“At Gerrit Maritz, we have been performing exceptionally well, thanks in part to incorporating our learners into the Warriors of West Athletics Club. Even some athletes from other schools across Rand West City are now joining the club,” said Warriors of West Athletics Club chairperson, Lucky Thato.

The winners for boys U9 are Tshimologo Metsing, Thapelo Leseja and Tshegofatso Mogodi.

Some highlights of League 3 included Laerskool Randfontein athletes Mieke van Rooyen (second), Retha Botha (first) and Tianie Fourie (third) claiming the podium in the girls’ U13 event. In the boys’ U11 race, Resegofetse Rabotapi from Matlapaneng took first place, beating Mqobi Molefe from Mohlakano (second) with Warona Moruledi from Mohlakeng Primary finishing third.
