SA men win bronze in Investec Cup

Smith and his team take bronze following 3-0 win over Scotland.

The South African men’s hockey team bounced back from their World Cup disappointment to beat Scotland 3-0 in London on Sunday to earn a bronze medal in the Investec Cup.

South African captain Austin Smith converted penalty corners in the 45th and 64th minutes, while Dan Sibbald also got onto the scoresheet for the Proteas.

The teenager complemented one of a host of inventive attacking moves with a well-taken goal in the 62nd minute.

The victory could have been put well beyond a doubt as a number of chances presented itself to South Africa, but the Scottish stopper Gavin Somerville was in good form.

South Africa will next meet Wales in unofficial test match at England’s training headquarters in Bisham Abbey, on Monday and Tuesday.

They will then leave for Glasgow on Thursday, ahead of an unofficial test match against Canada next Saturday.
