SA claim gold, silver in T37 100m

Track athletes add more medals to South Africa’s tally.

Track athletes Fanie van der Merwe and Charl du Toit added more medals to South Africa’s tally when they came first and second, respectively, in the 100m T37 on Monday.

Van der Merwe led from the start and set a time of 11.65 seconds to secure the gold medal, with Du Toit following closely on 11.89 seconds.

“It was a good race, a really nice experience running with my SA mates,” Van Der Merwe told Sapa. “I’m really pleased with my start and had a great transition but at the end I had a bit of a stumble but crossing that line first was an awesome experience.

Du Toit also hailed his training partner, who has now added the Commonwealth gold to the three medals he collected from Beijing in 2008 and the London 2012 Paralympics.

“To finish next to the best in the world is an honour,” said Du Toit. “I didn’t have that good a start but I am very happy with the execution of the race.”
