THE University of Venda (Univen) has appointed Prof Jan Ernst Crafford as deputy vice-chancellor academic on a five-year performance-based contract with effect from last Wednesday.

THE University of Venda (Univen) has appointed Prof Jan Ernst Crafford as deputy vice-chancellor academic on a five-year performance-based contract with effect from last Wednesday.

According to Univen spokesperson, Takalani Dzaga, Crafford is a highly esteemed academic with extensive experience in the higher education environment.

Dzaga said Crafford has been an academic for almost 30 years, with his recent full-time academic position being as associate professor in the department of zoology and as dean of the school of mathematical and natural sciences at Univen.

Speaking about his appointment, Crafford said it was an honour to be offered the position. “I look forward to the exciting challenge of this new role, and I am committed to driving the academic agenda of the university during the period of my employment,” he said.

Vice chancellor and Univen principal, Prof Peter Mbati welcomed the appointment.

“We are thrilled to welcome him to the university executive management team. Considering the wealth of experience that Prof Crafford brings with him, I have no doubt that he will drive the university’s academic agenda to the next level,” he said.

Mbati called on members of the university community and other stakeholders to give Crafford the support he required to succeed.
