PIET N. Aphane Secondary School in Zebediela has improved its 2013 matric results from a 35% pass rate in 2012 to 96,8% last year.
The school’s principal, Joseph Masekela, who joined the school in July, said the good results were the fruit of hard work and dedication by the teachers, learners and the community.
He said the school achieved the results by offering Saturday classes for gr. 12 learners, quarterly competitions to encourage the learners and each household in the community contributed R50 to pay for teachers who were outsourced to help with the Saturday and holiday classes.
“The school was regarded as one of the worst in the Magatle circuit in the past years and we decided to turn this around,” said Masekela.
Of the 31 learners who sat for the senior cartificate examinations last year, only one did not make it.
The school produced a 100% pass rate in maths literacy, 92,% in mathematics, 69,5% in physics, 100% in English, 100% in accounting, 100% in life orientation, 100% in geography and 100% in Sepedi.
Masekela said the results proved working together was the only way to achieve success.
He said the school aimed for a 100% matric pass rate this year and in the future.
“We are no longer going to settle for less than 100%, no matter what challenges we might face,” he said.
According to Masekela, the school faced a shortage of teachers, an administration block, a laboratory for physical science learners and a proper library.
The top gr. 12 learner, Rinolda Babini, was awarded R5 000 by a local businessman, Matlatle Aphane, while the second best learner, Tshepo Babini (no relation) was awarded R2 000 to help with registration at the University of Limpopo.
“We encourage parents to attend school meetings so we discuss the futures of the learners. Working together is key,” said Masekela.
The school is appealing for donations for a farewell function for the school’s former principal, Nare Moloto and the matriculants.
