Big clean-up helps lone cleaner cope

POLOKWANE – Not many people would give up their free Saturday to clean up someone else’s mess, but that is exactly what employees, parents and learners of Westenburg Secondary School did on Saturday.

Even the school’s deputy head, Bettie Boom, could be seen on her hands and knees scrubbing the floor.

“We do not have a regular cleaning team, since most of them resigned and the department has not filled their posts yet,” Boom explained.

Elsewhere on the premises, in the reception area, bathrooms and garden, teams were also cleaning with cleaning products that were donated by G. Fox and Company.

“It is terrible to see how dirty these bathrooms are, and it smells terrible,” Ruth Nagel, one of the volunteers, said.

Stella Hlangwane, the school’s only cleaner, said she was delighted to receive this assistance. “I cannot clean the whole school all by myself, she said.

Boom said they planned to have a big clean up once or twice a term, depending on how often it was needed.
