Limpopo eco-schools receive a nod for hard work and commitment

SCHOOLS that have adopted the Foundation of Environmental Education (FEE) programme under the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa) in the province were recently awarded with certificates and recycling bin units for their commitment and hard work.

These schools are known as eco-schools. Eco-schools is a school-based environmental management, certification and sustainable development education programme, which encourages and supports schools to improve environmental management and environmental learning in the school.

Eco-schools also support the national education curriculum (CAPS).

Schools in the programme are evaluated on their efforts to improve environmental awareness in the school and the community.

The eco-schools award ceremony also marked the 10th anniversary of eco-schools in South Africa and Limpopo. Ten recycling bin units were donated by the Capricorn District Municipality to eco-schools, Pepps Polokwane College, Thomo, Makeketela, Motholo, Tloukolobe, Kobe, Selelo, Mpebe, Malenkwana and Masete No. 1 Primary Schools.

Shylock Leshilo from the Capricorn District Municipality said: “South Africans are beautiful people hence it is important for them to live in a healthy environment. It is our obligation to shape-up a truly global, as well as optimistic and credible philosophy of the environment”.
