THE department of education and the Capricorn District Municipality held a graduation ceremony at the Ngaoko Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego recently for learners who are part of the Kha ri Gude Mass Literacy Campaign.
The Kha ri Gude Mass Literacy Campaign is a programme which enables adults above the age of 15 to become literate and numerate in one of the 11 official languages. More than 200 people graduated from the programme.
Clifford Mokoena, Kha ri Gude supervisor said the project accommodated anyone who did not get the opportunity to go to school to learn basic skills such as reading and writing.
“We want our elders to be able to read, write and calculate so they can be able to sign documents and do their monthly budgets. I think this will also give them room to encourage their grandchildren to go to school and learn,” said Mokoena.
He said Kha ri Gude helped a lot, and urged elderly people to register with the programme.
The MEC for education, Dikeledi Magadzi said more than 103 000 people in the province were trained to offer lessons to elderly people.
“I am honoured to be part of the graduation ceremony. The number of men in the project is very low, so the coordinators should recruit more men to join the programme. I am proud to announce that many graduates are now employed as domestic workers and this shows massive progress,” said Magadzi.
She congratulated the graduates and urged the elderly to join the programme.
