VOLUNTEER worker, Emily Mononela (55) from Famane village in Bolobedu in Greater Letaba, was awarded the 2013 Kha Ri Gude Mass Literacy Volunteer Coordinator national award by the department of basic education during the Annual National Teaching Awards in Johannesburg earlier this month.
Mononela, a former school teacher, was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the adult literacy programme.
She retired from teaching in 2010 due to ill health, and is now a volunteer coordinator for Kha Ri Gude (Let Us Learn) adult literacy programme in the Greater Letaba municipal area.
As coordinator, Mononela is responsible for 20 supervisors who oversee 200 Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) educators in 20 centres with over 3 000 adult learners.
Mononela, who also worked part time as an ABET facilitator at the University of South Africa for 12 years, said she was honoured to have been recognised by the department for her work.
Described as someone who has consistently proven herself to be an outstanding leader and motivator by her colleagues, Mononela received a certificate, trophy and cash prize for her tireless efforts to help develop the communities in the Greater Letaba area.
According to the department of basic education, the National Teaching Awards winners were selected from over 350 000 teachers across the country.
