Art horizons opened

Learners from six rural schools just outside the city had a wonderful time learning to understand art at the Polokwane Art Museum last Tuesday.

POLOKWANE – Learners from six rural schools just outside the city had a wonderful time learning to understand art at the Polokwane Art Museum last Tuesday.

The art museum presented a special school outreach programme and welcomed learners from rural schools to the museum with the aim of teaching them more about art and the origins of art.

Art museum curator, Amos Letsoalo, welcomed the learners and took them on a tour of the art museum, explaining each art work.

Art works that received special attention included those of Jackson Hlungwani, who comes from Nkanyani village in the former Gazankulu.

“Our outreach programme gives learners the chance to experience top art first hand.

“They will also complete questionnaires about the artwork they have seen.

“It is of great benefit to them as most of them have never been to a real art museum before,” Letsoalo said.

One of the learners, Charmain Sefara from Phunyako Secondary School in Ga-Molepo, said it was awesome to be there and that they had learned so much about art.

“To finally see Jackson Hlungwani’s art work personally was wonderful,” she said, adding that she and her friends had learnt about Hlungwani and his work in school
