AISA lectures focus on human resources

THE leaders of Africa should not undermine the powers they have to advance the continent.

THE leaders of Africa should not undermine the powers they have to advance the continent.

This opinion was submitted by Dr Palesa Sekhejane, research specialist in sustainable development at the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA), who was speaking at the AISA’s public lecture on sustainable development, governance and security held at the University of Venda last Tuesday.

“Most of the time political corruption plays a role in critical issues that concern investment. All human development towards a stable economic society is crucial.

“Having said this, it is up to us to invest in the future we want,” she said.

“We must be aware that the African continent is rich in a young population and if we can invest in young people, this would contribute much in the continent’s economic development.

“We must prioritise health and the health system.

“Healthy bodies are important, because if we have a healthy population, it will translate to healthy human resources,” she said.

Frank Lekaba, a research specialist in governance and security programmes at AISA, added that they worked closely with the department of international relations advising them on policy development.

University of Venda’s dean of the school of education, Dr Peter Mulaudzi, applauded the AISA’s public lecture and said it had covered current issues on topics such as food security, sustainable development and governance very well.

“We hope this will benefit our students in their research endeavours,” he said.
