Big walk to promote health

NURSES from Nkhensani Hospital and several departments in Giyani held a 6km walk in support of Pfunanani Special School for children with special needs.

NURSES from Nkhensani Hospital and several departments in Giyani held a 6km walk in support of Pfunanani Special School for children with special needs.

The walk ended with a voluntary screening for diseases such as diabetes and STIs.

According to Rose Shimange, a nursing sister at the human genetic section at Nkhensani Hospital, the walk was meant to not only promote healthy living for learners at Pfunanani Special School, but to benefit everyone who participated.

“Exercise has a lot of benefits for the human body, this is why it is very important that people exercise,” she said.

Shimange added that, besides the health benefits that they got from exercise, it was necessary for the nurses to lead by example. “When we tell patients to exercise we should know what we’re talking about,” she said.

Million Makumbila, founder of Pfunanani Special School expressed the school’s gratitude to the organisers of the event, saying it gave the learners a chance to walk outside the gates of the school.

“This was not only an opportunity for them to see the world outside, but also to get some muscles moving in their bodies.

“We all know that exercise is medication that promotes good health,” he said.
