77 Limpopo learners travel to Durban for Age Group Summer Games

SEVENTY-SEVEN intellectually impaired learners from nine schools in the province will travel to Durban for the Age Group Summer Games, which takes place from April 11 to 16.

The learners will compete in various sporting codes such as cricket, black ball pool, table tennis, swimming and hocker.

According to Ronny Mohlabi, the chairperson for the Limpopo Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired, hocker is a newly introduced sport for physically slow learners.

“Hocker is a combination of hockey and soccer and it is an interesting sport to watch.

“Players enjoy it, especially after scoring a goal. It is amazing how these learners remember the score. It shows that they have passion and love for the sport,” he said.

Mohlabi said the intellectually impaired confederation had the most international awards than any other confederation.

Limpopo will be represented by Fulufhelo Special School, Funanani Special School, Phatlaphadima School, Botlokwa Special School, Benedict and Hope School, Grace and Hope, Grace and Love, New Horison and Thusanang School.

Mohlabi said intellectually impaired people don’t take sport lightly, but rather as a lifeskill.

He urged schools to engage in sport so learners could use sport to refresh their minds, while others can use it to generate an income.
