UNIVERSITY of Venda (Univen) vice-chancellor and principal, Prof Peter Mbati, urged graduates to use their qualifications wisely to benefit themselves and society.
“A university qualification is valuable currency. Use it wisely to your benefit and to the benefit of society. You will now join a growing number of proudly Univen alumni who occupy positions of influence not only in South Africa, but the world over in both the public and private sector,” Mbati said, speaking during a graduation ceremony on Thursday and Friday.
He thanked all those who had played important roles in the lives of these graduates, including lecturing personnel, parents and academic leaders.
“We are celebrating the achievements of our students, our sons and daughters, for successfully completing their academic programmes and in recognition, awarding them with certificates, diplomas and degrees. We are confident that over the period of time that you have studied at Univen, you have acquired the necessary skills and competencies to allow you to flourish in whatever career choice you pursue and to meaningful contribute to the socio-economic development of our communities and societies and to the nation at large,” he added.
One of the graduates, Tholiso Ngulube, a student of environmental science, said hard work and determination were behind her success. “I worked hard throughout all my studies and I hoped to receive an award. I thank God for my success,” she said.
