Northern Upper Town CPF needs members to join
The importance of community policing forums (CPF) in the combat against crime cannot be underestimated.
POLOKWANE – The importance of community policing forums (CPF) in the combat against crime cannot be underestimated.
CPFs in the city take responsibility for their neighbourhoods’ safety by patrolling the area every day en keeping residents safe while most people are fast asleep in their beds.
Polokwane’s Northern Upper Town (NUT) CPF for sector 1 and 3 is just such a group of people, trying to make a difference in the city.
NUT CPF spokesperson, Peet Hartman, says residents who are involved with their CPFs play a major role in the fight against crime in the areas that they serve. He says the NUT CPF needs more people to become involved with this CPF.
Their needs include:
• CPF members who are willing to ride patrols during the day and night. Shifts are two hours long and two people ride together at all times. The CPF’s goal is for each member to only do one patrol every fortnight, but due to low numbers, members currently have to patrol twice a week.
• The NUT CPF needs financial assistance to buy night vision equipment that will be invaluable when tracking suspects in very dark areas.
• A room that the CPF can use free of charge to utilise as their patrol service room or control room. The building should be in the NUT CPF patrol area.
A weekly meeting is held every Tuesday at the Polokwane tennis courts and residents who would like to become involved and join the CPF of Sector 1 and 3 (the NUT CPF) are invited to join the meetings from 17:30.
The NUT CPF’s patrol area lies between Suid Street in the south of the city, Biccard Street in the west and Hospitaal Street in the north. The area also stretches up to Potgieter and Webster Street in the east.
“People are invited to get involved in their community and join the CPF.
“Membership is free and prospective members can call the NUT emergency number 060 321 6654 for assistance,” says Hartman.
