HUNDREDS of gr. 12 learners from various secondary schools in the Vhembe district had the opportunity to choose the career and institution of their choice thanks to the University of Venda Career (Univen) Career Exhibition.

The exhibition started last Monday and ended on Friday.

Nandipha Maluleke (20) a gr. 12 learner at Shirilele Secondary School said the exhibition helped her and other learners to decide which career and institution to choose to further their studies next year.

“I plan to study financial accounting at Univen next year, and I am determined to pass gr. 12 with flying colours,” said Maluleke.

Tshwane University of Technology, the University of Limpopo, Anglo American Platinum and Vhembe FET were some of the exhibitors at the career exhibition.

Steve Kekana, the president of Careers Exhibitions and Information Association, which organised the career exhibition, said the exhibition was an annual event to afford gr. 12 learners across the country the opportunity to get information about careers and entry requirements of institutions of higher learning.

“Universities are full at the beginning of each year, and we advise new students to apply on time to avoid the rush.

“We also teach them the advantages of online registration, which is fast and helps them to avoid queuing in long lines,” said Kekana.

He said there were new exhibitors this year such as Anglo American Platinum and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

Univen director of community engagement, Prof Vhonani Netshandama said collaboration between various institutions of higher learning was important to improve career choices for learners.

“Univen salutes the initiative by Careers Exhibitions and Information Association in organising the career exhibition,” said Netshandama.
