Debate teams in for the long run

Four school debate teams will compete in the semi-final round of the experienced category in the Mayoral debate Tournament on August 6.

POLOKWANE – Four school debate teams will compete in the semi-final round of the experienced category in the Mayoral debate Tournament on August 6.

Capricorn High School, Eagle’s Nest Christian School, Northern Academy and Stanford Lake College will compete in the competition, with Eagle’s Nest defending their title.

The teams gathered in the Polokwane Library’s activities room on Friday to ensure an unbiased semi-finals fixture, with team representatives using a draw to decide which teams would compete against each other.

Teams will debate the motion: “In instances where peaceful protests are met with a disproportionately violent state response, protesters should respond violently”.

Northern Academy will be proposing the motion to Capricorn High School, while Eagle’s Nest will be proposing the motion to Stanford Lake College.

Maurdy Dunster, debate tournament coordinator, said she was looking forward to crowning this year’s champions.

Eight teams in the inexperienced category will face each other the fourth round of the tournament on July 30, where after only four teams will proceed to the semi-finals.

M.E. Makgatho Secondary School was crowned champions in this category last year, but they will not be able to defend their title as they have already been eliminated from the tournament.
