LEARNERS at Matladi Project High School in Moletlane village in Zebediela have benefitted from a donation of 532 pairs of school shoes as well as 20 dictionaries, from the Rotary Club of Polokwane.
The donation was handed over to learners last Saturday.
According to the Rotary Club of Polokwane president Anne Kirkpatrick, the shoes, known as Tom shoes, came from Canada. “In Canada, for every pair of Tom shoes you buy, another pair is donated to needy children,” Kirkpatrick explained.
“The rotary club distributed approximately 3 000 pairs of shoes last year,” she added.
She said the rotary club focused on the neediest communities within the area they operated in.
“There are still other needy communities that we need to donate shoes and dictionaries to this winter,” said Kirkpatrick.
Regarding the dictionaries, Kirkpatrick explained that the rotary club participated in various fundraisers, and the money made was used to buy dictionaries.
She also mentioned that the Rotary Club of Polokwane also distributed wheelchairs every year.
Matladi Project High School deputy principal, Ruth Boitumelo Kekana, said it was a privilege and an honour to receive the donation.
“Most of the learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds, while some are from child-headed families. We thank the rotary club for the donation. They should continue doing the good work they are doing. We hope God will help them to keep doing a great job and helping other communities,” said Kekana.
Learner representative council president, Malebo Candice Bapela, concurred with Kekana’s sentiments.
“Not all of us have money to buy school shoes. These shoes have come to our rescue. We feel special knowing that we have people who care so much about us. We promise to put these shoes to good use.
The rotary club should continue doing a great job and changing the lives of disadvantaged communities.”
