The South African Country Districts (SACD) women's hockey tournament kicked off on Saturday on the Astro turf field at Hoërskool Pietersburg.

POLOKWANE – The South African Country Districts (SACD) women’s hockey tournament kicked off on Saturday on the Astro turf field at Hoërskool Pietersburg.

So far, more than 64 goals have been scored in this tournament, from which a SACD wo-men’s team will also be selected.

Two teams from Limpopo, the Limpopo invitational team and the Limpopo team are competing in the tournament.

The invitational team took on Southern Gauteng on Sunday morning, losing the fixture 5-0.

The Limpopo team, who played against the Northern Blues, had their work cut out for them in a tough game, with the halftime score at a 0-0 draw. The Limpopo ladies came back in the second half with two quick goals by Michelle Engelbrecht and Elisma Minnaar to win the match 2-0.

On Monday morning, the invitational team suffered a 4-1 loss against the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastal team.

Goals were scored by Meralda Bronkhorst, Shaydene Grant and Cindy Smith for Kwa-Zulu Natal, while Elmin Taylor slotted one into the nets for the Limpopo invitational team.

The Limpopo team played against Western Province later that afternoon, with Western Province securing a 3-1 win. Leani van der Merwe, Robyn Morgan and Liezel Smith each scored for Western Province, while Michelle Engelbrecht scored Limpopo’s goal.

The invitational side faced Mpumalanga on Tuesday and led 1-0 after halftime after Lezhan Volgraaf scored in the seventh minute.

Mpumalanga came back in the second half to even the score after Melissa van Wyk scored a goal.

Odette Kloppers secured the invitational side’s lead by scoring in the 64th minute. With the score 2-1 for Limpopo’s invitational side, Lauren Gauren from Mpumalanga levelled the score to 2-2, ending the match in a draw.

The Limpopo team took on Southern Gauteng on Tuesday afternoon with the ladies from Gauteng bagging a 4-0 win.

At the time of going to press, the Limpopo team was second in pool B, while the invitational team was in third place.

The games will continue from 08:30 every day this week and the finals will take place on Saturday at 14:00.
