POLOKWANE – Four men were due to appear before the Polokwane magistrate’s court yesterday (Monday) after being arrested on Friday for being in possession of suspected stolen goods as well as the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

According to Westenburg police spokesperson, Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, information was received that a certain house in Bulawayo Street, Ladanna, was being used to store suspected stolen goods.

The police raided the house early on Friday morning and found five men in possession of 25 cardboard boxes each filled with 50 cigarette cartons of different brands.

One of the suspects ran away and the police were still looking for him by the time of going to print.

The police also confiscated two bakkies, two rifles, a pistol, and ammunition. Mashiane said the estimated street value of the suspected stolen cigarettes was R500 000.

Mashiane further said the house where the goods were found was a commune, and seemingly the suspects were renting a room there.

The suspects, aged between 34 and 43 years remain in custody until they appear for a bail hearing, the date of which is yet to be set.

“We are looking for a man called Maxwell Vukeya. He could possibly help us with our investigation. Anyone with information on his whereabouts can contact the Westenburg police station at (015) 292 9410/15,” Mashiane said.
