UNIVEN urges: Apply on time

TO make it easier for gr. 12 learners from rural schools in the Vhembe district to access career guidance, the University of Venda recently launched the “Apply on Time” campaign, which visits schools and equips learners with information on the various courses available at the institution.

Takalani Thabo, an administrator at the University of Venda, said they wanted to encourage gr. 12 learners to apply on time to institutions of higher learning. He said they had so far visited schools which included Mamphodo Secondary School and met with gr. 12 learners from Tshirenzheni and Gunda villages.

“We know that some learners did not know about the courses we offer at the university. For a gr. 12 learner to be admitted at the University of Venda, they must have passed gr. 12 with a bachelor pass,” said Thabo.

Representing the department of education in the Vhembe district, Lazarus Lavhengwa urged parents to develop a good relationship with their children’s teachers, and advised learners to choose careers carefully so they may be employable after their studies.

“We want learners from rural areas to study very hard and concentrate on developing their villages. They must aim to improve the bad situation in their rural communities for the better,” said Lavhengwa.

The principal of Mamphodo Secondary School, Hosea Matodzi was happy that the university visited the school. Matodzi said his aim was to motivate gr. 12 learners to study hard so they may be admitted to study at the University of Venda next year.

One of the gr. 12 learners at Mamphodo Secondary School, Tshanduko Matshovhana said he wanted to study law after school at the University of Venda, and said he would take his education seriously once there.
