Winter school refreshes the mind

Although they woke up with a bit of difficulty due to the cold winter mornings, learners from Taxila Secondary School said the winter school the school offered them, was worth it.

POLOKWANE – Although they woke up with a bit of difficulty due to the cold winter mornings, learners from Taxila Secondary School said the winter school the school offered them, was worth it.

The classes were offered to all gr. 11 and gr.12 learners.

More than 300 learners attended the classes, which started on June 30 and ended yesterday (Wednesday).

Review asked the learners how it felt to go to school during the holidays, how the winter school helped them, and if it helped them prepare for the trial examinations.

Thato Sathekge said it was not nice to wake up so early during the holidays, but it was worth it.

“We did revision during the winter school and that helped me understand the work better and to prepare for the examinations.”

Mmakgabo Masipa said by attending winter school, she was ahead of some of the other learners.

“We went into detail on some topics and discussed certain problems, which I did not understand in class. We also learned different methods in which to approach problems. It was difficult to wake up in the mornings, because it is cold. But thinking of the benefits I would reap at the end of the winter school motivated me to get up.”

Dineo Ledwaba said winter school was beneficial because they were taught different methods on how to deal with learning problems and were given tips on how to prepare for the examinations.

Masesi Montjane said winter school was good because it kept her in study mode.

“At home, the holiday fever would have gotten hold of me and I would not be as dedicated. I would have been tempted to sleep late and watch TV.

“Another benefit of winter school was that we got to ask for help in areas that we struggle to understand in class.”

Alpha Munyai said winter school was good academically and socially.

“I got to meet new people, because there were learners from other schools who also attended our winter school. I also learned new ways to work through learning problems, especially mathematics.”

Nthabiseng Nare and Sarah Maleka said the most difficult thing for them was to wake up in the mornings for the winter school.

“It’s very cold in the morning and that made it difficult for a person to want to get up and go to school when you are supposed to be on holiday, but we knew what benefits we would reap from the winter school and that motivated us to get up and come to school every morning.

“We understand our work better and this will help us to prepare for the examinations.”

Sibulele May said the winter school helped her to understand her work better and to find easier ways to resolve problems, especially in mathematics.

“The examinations will start shortly after schools reopen, and because I attended winter school, the work will be fresh in my head and this will make it easier for me when I study for the examinations.”

Choene Maapola said he liked winter school because the teachers had more time to deal with learners one-on-one.

“I felt more comfortable to ask questions and I felt free to ask for a teacher’s help where I did not understand.”
