POLOKWANE – The August winds ripping through the city on Friday caused havoc when it ripped off roofs and toppled trees in some parts of the city.

Tom Naudé Technical High School was evacuated for the day shortly after 240m² of the school hall’s roof was blown off the building.

School principal, Francois Armer, said the school’s management was still waiting for quotations to repair the roof, but the damage was estimated at approximately R100 000.

“We are grateful that no one was injured in the incident and the school is back to normal with no academic time lost in the end,” he said.

In another incident a tree split in half and crashed down onto the front part of a house in Rabe Street. No one was home at the time.

A fast-food delivery man, Moses Mojapelo, was blown over by a strong gust of wind while he was making deliveries on his motorcycle.

“I was not injured and there was no damage to the motorcycle, but I had a big fright.”

Speaking on behalf of Real Time Weather Observations, Fred Calitz said that the winds in and around Polokwane blew at between 40km/h and 50km/h on Friday.
