Souties welcome season of spring by planting an African olive tree

MAKHADO – Soutpansberg Primary School enjoyed a double celebration on Monday when they welcomed spring by planting a tree.

Traditionally, South Africans welcome the first day of spring on September 1 each year.

At the same time, national Arbor Week falls between September 1 and 7.

This is why the Souties decided to greet the new season with a tree planting ceremony.

Teacher Adri Kloppers told Review that they decided to plant an African olive tree, because it is a large tree with many shady branches.

“We used the opportunity to teach the learners about the importance of trees and how to treat and respect them,” she said.

To celebrate Spring Day, the learners wore casual clothes full of bright and colourful flowers to school.

They enjoyed a lovely picnic on the rugby field and enjoyed fruit, cold drinks and plenty of sweets.

Kloppers also made large, bright cardboard flowers and planted them around the school for extra colour.
