Ranger team’s eyes firmly on the prize

Mitchell House College's planned rugby team came into being this year, with the team participating against other schools in the Mini Schools Rugby League during the first term.

POLOKWANE – Mitchell House College’s planned rugby team came into being this year, with the team participating against other schools in the Mini Schools Rugby League during the first term.

Sports director, Frederick Romijn, said while they, and the other participating schools including Pepps Polokwane College, Curro Northern Academy and Capricorn High School, enjoyed playing in the league, they all felt they would like to compete against larger schools, and decided to form one team from the four schools.

The team, which will be named the Rangers, was chosen after play-outs were done.

“The name Rangers represents the fighting, team spirit that we have. If you go to war you fight together and work together to win and that is what the Rangers stand for,” he said.

The team consists of four players from Mitchell House, one from Pepps and 16 from Northern Academy. There was one player from Capricorn, but he has since been injured.

Romijn is the team organiser and the coaches will be Sean Stevens and Regardt Kleingeld.

“We are very grateful to Vodacom who decided to sponsor us,” Romijn added.

“They will sponsor our jerseys, socks and shorts and even gave each player a brand new cell phone with 110 megabytes of data every month for a year.”

The colours of their kit will be the four schools’ colours combined.

“We decided to enter the Kia Bosveld Rugbyfees tournament that takes place from September 3 to September 17 at Pietersburg Hoërskool,” he added.

Mitchell House headmaster, Andrew Cook said they were very thankful to Vodacom for their sponsorship.

“Without the team, these learners would not be able to play against well-established rugby schools,” he said.
