SOME 180 learners from Blouberg and Musina have the opportunity to improve their competence in maths, physical science and English thanks to the De Beers Saturday School.
This educational intervention plan recently celebrated its first successful quarter where senior teaching personnel and corporate professionals from the University of Limpopo, the University of Johannesburg and De Beers tutored learners from gr. 10 to 12.
In partnership with Khula Weekend School, the intervention aims to increase the number of learners who achieve university admission through improved academic results.
The tutors also try to encourage the learners to look at career opportunities in technical fields like engineering and science.
Learners from three high schools in Musina and seven in Blouberg must meet strict criteria and adhere to regular attendance and weekly homework schedules or forfeit their place for more deserving learners in this programme.
This disciplined approach prepares the learners for the world of work where better results are not only measured, but expected.
The programme offers transport to world class tutorials and exam preparation entirely free of charge. The initiative costs De Beers approximately R300 000 annually, while local contractor, VM Diamond generously sponsors an additional R240 000 towards the transportation of rural learners to the various venues.
Murray and Roberts also came on board and donated R500 000 for the tutors’ salaries and stationery.
