THE University of Limpopo honoured its faculty of humanities personnel during the Humanities Excellence Awards on Thursday.
The personnel were awarded for their hard work and to recognise their academic contributions to teaching and research.
Prof Mahlapahlapane Themane was named the best researcher in educational studies, the associate professor in psychology, Kathryn Nel was awarded the best female researcher, while Mpho Modipane walked away with the best teacher or lecturer award.
The acting dean of the faculty of humanities, Dr Makgwana Rampedi, said the faculty was one of the core sections at the university, which needed to be an example on how to provide quality education to students by conducting relevant research and community engagement.
He said the faculty of humanities had already achieved excellent results in student performance since the establishment of the awards last year.
“As an example, during the May 2014 graduation, the faculty produced 71 masters’ degree graduates, which I think is a milestone considering that we hardly had doctorate candidates in the past,” said Rampedi.
Themane said he dedicated the award to his colleagues, whom he said played a role in motivating him to work hard. He advised aspirant researchers, saying they should read and write daily.
Nel said the award made her feel recognised.
“I have been in the teaching business for three decades and this award is a sign that I am developing tomorrow’s leaders,” said Modipane.
