POLOKWANE – Junior chess players in the province gathered at Pemps on Saturday to prepare for the South African Junior Chess Championships, which will take place in Kimberly from January 3 to 7.
About 86 chess players from Limpopo will take part in the championships.
According to the South African Junior Chess representative, Frans Badenhorst, players had to battle it out in a few tournaments before they were selected to participate in the national championships.
“Players need to accumulate as many points as possible in order to be part of the provincial team. Players are so committed and hard working and I am certain that they will do well during the championships,” said Badenhorst.
It was the first time Pemps hosted the provincial chess tournament.
Driesman Bester of Pemps said they were honoured and grateful to host the provincial chess game.
He added that four players from Pemps would form part of the provincial team that will compete in Kimberly next year. “I believe that our players will represent us well and come home with medals and trophies,” said Bester.
