POLOKWANE – Two learners from Mitchell House decided to donate some of their time and money for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) during the year.
Shaakira Hassim (13) and Yasmeen Ghoord (12) both have family members who suffered from cancer and this motivated the two learners to reach out to Cansa.
Yasmeen decided to donate R400 pocket money that she saved up to the Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) children’s ward at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.
Bobby Were, TLC facilitator, received Yasmeen’s donation at Mitchell House’s school concert on September 15. “We really appreciate this donation. There are not many learners that would do what Yasmeen did,” said Were at the time.
Shaakira decided to raise money for children who needed prosthetic eyes.
“We held cake sales to raise money for children who need prosthetic eyes. They need these eyes due to the fact that they lost their own eyes through cancer,” explained Shaakira.
She also made and sold ribbons with little eyes on them to raise awareness and money for this cause. By the end of the third school term, she had made hundreds of ribbons and her friends had to chip in to help her with this workload.
Were said he would take both learners to the TLC ward so that they could see how they made a difference there.
