MOKOPANE – MALEYA Secondary School’s top 2014 matriculant, Annadale Nkuna, received accolades together with the school’s other top learners at an award ceremony in Sekuruwa village, Mokopane last Friday.
As the school’s overall top 2014 achiever, she received two distinctions and marks ranging from 63% in mathematics and physical science to 81% and 84% in life sciences and life orientation respectively. Her average was 73%.
“At the beginning of last year, I aimed high. I told myself that I was going to get seven distinctions,” said Nkuna, the sole receiver of the Principal’s Award.
She said she planned to study medicine at Medunsa.
Addressing learners during the ceremony, Annadale reminded them to focus on school and stay away from drugs. She encouraged the learners to focus on their studies and also to pray.
“My friend and I used to study here at school until 02:00 in the morning. God protected us on our way back home because we believed that we could not do anything without prayer,” she said.
Fellow learner Adolf Mashamba warned learners against watching too much television and said this time should rather be used for their studies.
Annadale and Adolf said that they were encouraged to study harder after visiting some of Venda’s top schools, Thengwe and Tshivhase secondary schools, last year.
Maleya Secondary School principal, Muofhe Mosola, told learners to aspire to achieve difficult targets and be enthusiastic and confident.
The award ceremony was sponsored by Sasko, who handed out rulers and water bottles. Local general practitioner, Dr Mantagane Kekana, sponsored the trophies and medals.
The school will host its next award ceremony after the March quarterly examinations.
