GIYANI – NHLALALA Primary School in Giyani received a fully stocked mobile library worth R350 000 from the Avbob Foundation last Wednesday.
The donation made Nhlalala the 20th beneficiary to receive a library. The mobile library project has become the foundation’s flagship project after being launched in January 2013.
To date, 19 fully equipped libraries have been donated to disadvantaged schools in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West, Free State, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.
Each library is constructed from a refurbished shipping container.
These libraries are delivered painted, decorated and fitted with air conditioning, wooden laminated floors, shelving, a blackboard, tables and chairs and 2 400 new books.
Avbob’s executive committee members were joined by department of basic education representatives to deliver the facilities aimed at supporting underprivileged South African learners.
Frik Rademan, group chief executive officer of the Avbob Mutual Assurance Society, said he hoped the donations would provide an exceptional advantage on the literacy levels of the learners.
“Once again I think our panel of selectors have done a marvellous job in selecting a school that deserves recognition for their performance and accomplishments.
“I believe the library will be well used by the learners of Nhlalala Primary School and this will facilitate many other exciting new initiatives that will inspire them to read and to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills,” Rademan said.
Nhlalala principal Rirhandzu Ngwenya thanked the foundation for contributing towards the learners’ education and literacy by helping them discover the joy of reading.
“This is a miracle for this school. We have been applying to many organisations for help with book donations, but we never imagined that we could be given a whole new library,” said Ngwenya at the handover ceremony.
