Westenburg athletics fun

For the first time ever, the Westenburg community held a Westenburg Pre-school athletics meeting at the Westenburg sports grounds last Friday.

POLOKWANE – For the first time ever, the Westenburg community held a Westenburg Pre-school’s athletics meeting at the Westenburg sports grounds last Friday.

Three pre-schools participated in the meeting: Noddy’s Playground, Crèche and Pre-school, Care Bears Day Care and Little Sunshine.

The festivities started with a parade led by two bikers from the Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club.

Each pre-school’s learners wore different colours in order to stand out; Care Bears wore blue, Noddy’s were dressed in yellow and Little Sunshine wore different brightly coloured T-shirts.

The children participated in the following items: shot put, sack races, hula-hoop races, short distance races, potato-on-a-spoon races and pour-water-in-a-bottle race.

Parents and teachers also attended the event to support the athletes.

Each athlete paid R15 to participate and received a hot dog and juice for their efforts. Parents and the community paid an entree fee of R20.

Results:

1. Care Bears Daycare.

2. Noddy’s Playground, Crèche and Pre-school.

3. Little Sunshine.

Tina Mandelkorn, event organiser said the purpose of the day was two-fold, for the children to have fun, and to raise money to help an under privileged school.

“We have identified a school in Polokwane, but instead of donating the money, we asked the school what they needed and we bought the goods with the money raised at the athletics meeting. The winning pre-school will hand over the goods to the school.”

Mandelkorn thanked everyone who supported the event.

“I would like to thank the parents and community who cheered the children on as they were competing.

“A special thank you to all the pre-school’s who participated, because without them the day would not have been possible.

“I would like to thank the following sponsors who made the day possible: Ark printers who sponsored the medals, Noddy’s Playground, Crèche and Pre-school who sponsored the colddrinks, Polokwane Child and Family Welfare, Enterprise, Mark Markgraaff, Sasko and FNB,” she said.
