POLOKWANE – Gr. R is the foundation on which a child’s future is built, according to Lucresia Antonio.
Antonio is the mother of five-year-old Carla who is a gr. R learner at Pemps.
Carla explained to Review in an interview last Thursday how much she loved gr. R. “Gr. R is very nice, because at school they teach us how to paint, draw and cut. We also learn about different careers at school like doctors, teachers and lawyers. We also get to play outside and we have naptime,” Carla said.
Carla is also very excited that she can count to 20 and knows different nursery rhymes.
“We get homework everyday and I enjoy doing my homework, because I show my parents what we learned at school. Sometimes my mommy helps me with my homework when I am not sure what to do.
“At school our teacher also reads to us everyday, and I really like all the stories that we read. Gr. R is also very nice because I have a lot of friends and we play together and learn in class,” Carla said.
Carla said she also enjoyed seeing what was in her lunchbox that her mother packs her each day. “I love bread with butter and tomatoes with lots of Aromat and my mommy always puts it in for me with my favourite juice. I like pineapple juice.”
Lucresia said: “Everyday Carla comes home with something new that she learned at school, and there are no words to describe the excitement in my daughter’s voice or the joy in her eyes when she tells me and her father what she learned. She is is also very eager to teach her younger brother and cousin what she learned at school.”
Asked what the best part of school was this year, Carla said: “Winning Little Miss Pemps was the best thing that ever happened. At first I was very shy and scared, but then I practised at home with my mom and sister and that day I just walked and smiled and I won. I was very happy,” Carla said.
Carla added that she enjoys being at home, but cannot wait for the schools to open, because she misses her teacher and friends.
