POLOKWANE – With the rugby season in mind, Review spoke to some of Laerskool Pietersburg-Noord’s first team rugby players about what they thought about the game and what it meant to them to play rugby.
Hardus Engelbrecht said he loved going on rugby tours before the season and winning games in different towns. “Being able to see that people all over love the game as much as I do means that the game of rugby will be around for many years to come,” he said.
Dane Watson said to him rugby felt like home.”When you are playing in a team there is a lot of work to do but what makes playing rugby the most fun is that you have the best friends possible on the field. It is like an extension of your family and that is what makes the game great,” Dane said.
Malekela Mlothane said rugby taught boys to work hard for something, and results meant that you had given your very best. “Rugby teaches teamwork and supporting other people; when you apply these things in daily life, you become a better person and that means that the game does not only teach you to be a team player but also to support the people around you,” Malekela said.
Lunghani Mahlehlo said while he loved his family at home very much, playing rugby gave him a new family on the field. “We are like family; these boys who play with me are my brothers. We play hard together and have fun, we feel sad together when things do not go as planned, but the best thing is that there are other people who know how you feel and who go with you and this makes us family,” Lunghani said.
