Laerskool Bergvlam’s rugby team to step out in new kit

LAERSKOOL Bergvlam's rugby team recently received a boost with new playing kit from Shoprite in Phangami Mall in Thohoyandou.

LIMPOPO – LAERSKOOL Bergvlam’s rugby team recently received a boost with new playing kit from Shoprite in Phangami Mall in Thohoyandou.

The hand-over of the kit was held at the school on Friday.

Benedict Radzilani, Shoprite Phangami Mall’s brand manager, said they donated soccer and rugby kits to various community projects and schools to help them better themselves through sport.

“We have a social responsibility to the communities where we do business.

“We want to help keep young people off the streets,” said Radzilani.

The coach of the Bergvlam rugby team, Michael Van den Berg, said before he started the rugby team at Bergvlam, he noticed that various schools around Vhembe did not play rugby.

“I then approached Bergvlam Primary School, which showed interest in the game and the rugby team was formed in 2013,” said Van den Berg.

He said the team had grown from strength to strength and boasts trophies and medals.

The sports manager at Bergvlam Primary School, Nkhanedzeni Dzaga, said they were approached by the Thohoyandou Sports Rugby Union to introduce rugby in schools.

“We urge other donors to donate rugby kit and balls and make the school the centre of rugby in the region,” said Dzaga.
