POLOKWANE – Schools around the country recently commemorated School Safety Week, which was from May 3 to 10, and the schools in the city were no exception.
School Safety Week is aimed at educating parents, teachers and learners about safety measures, especially in and around the school.
Review spoke to various schools in the city to find out what safety measures were in place at their schools.
Noorderland High School principal, Piet van Rensburg, said there were two security guards watching over the school from 06:00 to 18:00 to make sure learners were safe.
“Visitors sign in with their details before proceeding to the school offices. The school is responsible for learners’ safety during school hours since parents trust us with their children’s lives,” said Van Rensburg.
He added that there was a parking lot where parents parked after school hours to fetch their children. He further explained that one of the security guards watched learners closely to make sure they crossed the road safely.
Karen Adlem, Pemps gr. R principal, said there was a remote controlled gate at the school to make sure that people did not come in and out as they pleased.
“We also teach our children not to talk to strangers. Stranger means danger to us. We are now busy with evacuation exercises to prepare learners for emergencies such as fire,” said Adlem.
