LIMPOPO – Mopani Spar in Giyani opened a clothes bank, the Mopani Clothing Bank, where residents could drop off unwanted clothes and blankets that the shop could later donate to charities in the community.
Store manager, Johan Clack, said this was Spar’s way of giving back to the community. “You know being a store, if it wasn’t for the community we wouldn’t exist, so we needed to do something to give back to the community,” he said. “You can bring all your unwanted clothes and blankets to the clothes bank, we do not care what it is, even if it is tattered clothes, as long as it is still wearable it will always make difference to someone out there who has nothing at all,” he said.
Apart from the current clothes bank initiative, Mopani Spar provides food parcels every weekend to 17 churches around Giyani to assist the underpriveleged households in their community. “We chose to give back via churches because they are close to the communities and it is easier for us to liaise with them as they know who the families in need are,” said Clack.
