Violent clashes between mineworkers in Northam
A 45-year-old man was murdered in Northam on Sunday

LIMPOPO – An employee of Northam Platinum Mine, the deceased was a member of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
According to provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, the man shot in the head by an unknown man, who then fled on foot.
“As far as we know, the murder sparked clashes between NUM members and members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), who are clashing on the Northam/Thabazimbi road near the Railway Gate. One person, anothe NUM member, died after he was stabbed with an assegai,” said Otto.
No arrests have been made in the two murders.
The police have been deployed to the area, and motorists and travellers are advised to avoid the area.
On Monday afternoon, Otto said the situation in the area “was back to normal” with the R510 road between Northam and Thabazimbi open to the public.
“The police fired rubber bullets to disperse the two groups. There have been no other reports of injuries, and the police will continue to patrol the area.”
