Registration lines seem to have no end for queuing students

Tumelo Morobe, the Public Relations Officer for Capricorn TVET College said that all Capricorn TVET colleges are full for the 2019 academic year and they have and will not be accepting walk-ins.

POLOKWANE – The 2019 academic year has opened for students and thousands of students are queuing in registration lines that seem to have no end.

Looking at the number of prospective students seeking admission at colleges, it is clear that many will not find space. This is a sad reminder of the question that arises about the registration processes at institutions of higher learning.

Last year six students, queuing for registration, were injured during a stampede that took place at Capricorn TVET College.

Tumelo Morobe, the Public Relations Officer for Capricorn TVET College said that all Capricorn TVET colleges are full for the 2019 academic year and they have and will not be accepting walk-ins. He did however state that capturers are still in the process of capturing the applications and there are a total of 300 students that are currently on the college’s waiting list. “Over a thousand students were rejected, not because they did not meet the requirements, but because there is no space. Since Monday, 7 January we’ve had registration at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and 1 300 students showed up,” he said.

At the Seshego campus, 1 500 students were also rejected due to lack of space and not having applied last year prior to registration. Although queues are inevitable, they are strict about only registering students that have been provisionally accepted.

“We sent out SMS’s to those whose applications were successful, for those that were not contacted, it means that their applications were unsuccessful,” he said. It is not all doom and gloom though because he explained that those who are on the waiting list will be referred to other colleges in other districts should there be space available.
