More than 600 firefighters attached to Working on Fire (WoF) in Limpopo were hard at work suppressing wildfires that broke out on various farms in Mogalakwena, Modimolle and Molemole areas over the past two months.
In May, according to WoF Provincial Spokesperson, Matema Gwangwa, firefighters responded to seven different wildfires that occurred in various locations under different regions. “For the month of June WoF has responded to 14 wildfires with Molemole team being the busiest by responding to eight of those fires in the farms Capricorn region,” she stated and urging community members to remain vigilant and cautious as veld fires are likely to occur until the end of October
She stressed that communities should report all fires that they see to their local fire brigade immediately. They should refrain from starting fires in open areas and from throwing out cigarette butts through vehicle windows while driving as fires are easily started that way and often end up being runaway fires, she explained.
“We will continue working hard this winter fire season by responding to wildfire calls in order to save lives and protect the environment. We will also keep on educating communities about the impact of wildfires,” Gwangwa concluded.
