Police joined by crime fighters have confiscated a Mercedes-Benz C200 suspected to have previously been used to rob filling stations in the city a week ago.
The vehicle was discovered on the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Church streets during an operation conducted last Thursday. The Police have reportedly been searching for the vehicle and the suspects involved in the robberies for about two months. When Polokwane Observer got to the scene, one of the law enforcers indicated that the driver of the vehicle had been loaded into a Police van.
He further stated that the vehicle reportedly belonged to a certain car rental company and reiterated that the car was allegedly used in several robbery incidents at filling stations, including filling up the suspected vehicle’s petrol tank and fleeing without paying. He added that the perpetrators allegedly also used the same vehicle in instances when they would fill drums with petrol at filling stations and drive off without settling the bill. Onlookers at the scene informed Polokwane Observer that two men who were with the driver had been set free.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that they were still pursuing the suspects in the matter and that no arrests had been made. He said the man who was put in the back of the Police van was still being profiled. When asked if the vehicle had been used in the commission of the alleged crimes, Ngoepe would not comment but undertook to provide an update in due course.
