Limpopo police nab three out of five gang-rape suspects

Three out of five suspects were arrested with the assistance from the community after a 35-year-old woman was gang-raped near Modimolle on Sunday.

LIMPOPO – The acting provincial police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers said no stone should be left unturned in tracking down the remaining two suspects involved in the gang rape of a 35-year-old woman on Sunday (April 23).

Scheepers’ remarks follow the swift arrest of three suspects by the Modimolle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the woman was with her boyfriend from a local tavern when they met five men, of which one was known to the couple.

The man invited the couple to his house for further entertainment and on arrival, the woman’s boyfriend was threatened while she was dragged to a bedroom and gang-raped.

Ledwaba said the woman’s boyfriend managed to escape and alerted the police who rushed to the scene.

“The suspects had already fled the scene and the victim explained that all five suspects took turns in raping her. Three of the suspects were arrested shortly after the incident with assistance from the community,” he said.

Five cases of rape have been opened and the three suspects, aged between 27 and 36 years old will appear before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (April 25).

Police are appealing to anyone with information about the remaining suspects to contact the  investigating officer Warrant Officer Ciska Kruger on 082 967 7756 or the crime stop number on 08600 10111.
