Promoting internet safety to the younger generation
Parents can help their children get the most out of social media by setting boundaries on when and how they use it.

POLOKWANE – Increasing technological advances have resulted in more children having unrestricted access to smartphones, which is both a good and a bad thing.
Despite the educational and social benefits of smartphones, children are still exposed to harsh social media environments and without proper parental guidance and often do things that put their lives in danger.
According to Sisonke Seti from the Film and Publication Board, children should use social media wisely and avoid posting negative things, sharing propaganda or inciting violence online and bullying other kids.
Seti also explained various types of bullying that occur online that children might find themselves in include body shaming, swearing online, stalking, and discriminating against others.
He emphasised that children should also avoid sharing or posting nudity content. “The internet does not forget, how you portray yourself on social media might have a negative impact on you, if not now, it might catch up with you later when you try to find a job,” he said.
It is important to promote internet safety to children as it provides a safe online environment. Children should avoid entertaining bullies and should report them to their parents and teachers immediately.
Furthermore, parents are advised to monitor their children’s phones and ensure that they don’t engage in any activity that could harm them.
