Veteran runner Ludwick Mamabolo joins UL as trainer

Mamabolo say he is looking forward to sharing the experience and knowledge that he has accumulated over a period of 20 years.

MOKOPANE -2012 Comrades Marathon winner, Ludwick Mamabolo joined the University of Limpopo’s (UL) Athletics Club on May 2.

He is expected to train aspiring athletes in the Mankweng area as well as those from the university.

The 46-year-old running veteran brings a vast knowledge of running and invaluable track and field experience.

He will also nurture and motivate a brand of other athletes who will be able to hold their own in various competitions in the colours of the University.

“Joining the university is like a dream come true, because finally I am back home and looking forward to sharing the experience and knowledge that I have accumulated over a period of 20 years. It will be an interesting and exciting chapter to work with young and up-and-coming athletes, especially grooming them and giving them advice so that they can reach the highest accolades in their running careers,” Mamabolo said.

He says he wants athletes in Mankweng and various areas in the province to rise through the ranks of Athletics South Africa all the way to international championships.

Mamabolo has already competed in the colours of the university since joining. His first race was the Wolfpack Marathon in Tzaneen where he finished third, making the podium alongside another teammate, Ananias Masila, who finished second. That means two podium positions for UL, with many more to come, he said.

Z the executive director of marketing and communication at the University of Limpopo, said it is an honour to have a local of Ga-Mamabolo, a native of Limpopo and a marathon great, especially an ultra-marathoner who won the Comrades, embrace the university and train students and community members to follow in his footsteps.

Sonica Fritz, acting director of sport and recreation, said the department was delighted to have Mamabolo join UL.

“He will be involved in getting our students and community members active and starting to enjoy marathon running. We are looking forward to the influence that Mamabolo will have at UL.”
