Tshifhiwa Nephawe’s death mourned after short illness

Radio pioneer Tshifhiwa Nephawe joined Phalaphala FM in Polokwane where he started the midnight show, Khoroni, which became very popular with listeners. Its format was soon copied to other SABC radio stations.

LIMPOPO- Family and friends are mourning the death of former radio presenter, Tshifhiwa Pat Nephawe (68), who died at the NHC Centre in Thohoyandou on June 1, following a short illness.

In a career spanning 37 years, Nephawe presented various shows, starting at the former homeland Radio Thohoyandou in 1979, where he presented among others, news and sports bulletins.

Even though he excelled at everything he did, his love of jazz was most striking, and he started presenting a jazz show for the station in 1980.

When Radio Thohoyandou ceased to exist, Nephawe joined Phalaphala FM in Polokwane, where he started the midnight show, Khoroni, which became very popular with listeners. Its format was soon copied to other SABC radio stations.

In his time, Nephawe mentored many presenters, passing on the baton to a younger generation of presenters at the station. Through his popularity, he attracted audiences across various age and language groups.

Phalaphala FM programme manager, Sharon Ravele was at a loss for words following his passing.

“This is such a great loss, not only for the family but for the entire community. Pat was instrumental in many of Phalaphala FM’s projects, and undoubtedly one of the greatest presenters of his time. We will miss him, and we pray that God gives his family the comfort they need in this time of grief.”

Nephawe’s daughter, Rita Dee Nephawe, said although they were saddened by her father’s death, they were proud to have had such a valuable member of the community in their family.

Nephawe was buried at Makwarela on Saturday.
