The expectations of becoming a father for the first time
First time dad Given Mabasa wants his baby to have everything that he never had and is worried whether he is equipped to be a good father.
POLOKWANE- This Father’s Day, fathers who are doing the best to do right by their families are celebrated.
A nod is also given to father figures who play an important role to children that they may have not biologically fathered but have a relationship that supersedes biology.
The Polokwane Observer spoke to Given Mabasa, an expectant father awaiting the arrival of his first child.
He shared that he cannot wait for Father’s Day next year so that he can join in the celebrations and be spoiled.
Mabasa’s child is due on August 20 and they do not know the gender. “We have decided to keep it a surprise. Initially, I was on board with it but as the due date approaches, I am becoming more anxious to find out what it is,” he said.
He also shared that he often has sleepless nights because he wants to give his child the best life. He worries about whether he has prepared enough for the new arrival.
“I want the baby to have everything I never had. I was raised by my mother and grandmother so I never really had a father figure. I worry about whether I am equipped to be a good father,” he said.
He added that he has been watching many videos on YouTube to prepare for nappy changes, bottle feeds and soothing the baby on those restless nights. He wants to be part of it every step of the way.
“I am not completely clueless because I was there when my younger siblings were born, I have seen some of the routines but it’s still scary to know that this time it is all on me,” he said.
Mabasa also urged his fiancée to plan his Father’s Day gift next year because he does not want socks or a mug. “I can’t get socks on my birthday and on Father’s Day. I will give a hint as to what I want: It is red, has four wheels and v8 engine,” he joked.
