Vhembe farmers concerned about stock theft
Cattle farmers around the Tshitale area blame the police for not acting swiftly as they seldom receive feedback from them.
LIMPOPO – Cattle farmers around the Tshitale area have raised concern over an increase in stock theft in Tshivhangani, after 10 heads of cattle were found slaughtered in the bushes on August 10. The farmers claim that on the morning in question, they discovered the cattle and they now fear there is a syndicate operating in the area.
They also blame the police for not acting swiftly.
Devastated cattle farmers told CV how the incident occurred at a mealie field on the evening of August 9.
“When we report these cases, the police don’t act fast and the perpetrators are never arrested.”
According to a farmer who lost five heads of cattle, Edward Mulaudzi they seldom receive feedback from the police.
“They come and take statements, and don’t come back to us on what is happening. If things continue this way, we will be forced to stay in the bushes day and night and things may turn ugly.”
Another farmer, Hangwani Rambau shared these sentiments.
Police spokesperson, Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that they are aware of the stock theft in the Vhembe area.

“We are trying our level best to apprehend the suspects but we do have challenges. Owners leave their cattle in this area overnight, and we have asked that owner brand their animals. In this way, we can identify the animals when we locate them,” added Ledwaba.
Police have urged cattle farmers to employ people to look after their livestock.
