Level 1 severe thunderstorm warning issued for Polokwane

Despite no rain forecast for Polokwane this week, the South African Weather Service has placed the city under a Level 1 severe thunderstorm warning for this afternoon.

POLOKWANE – The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 1 severe thunderstorm warning for Polokwane.

The warning is in effect from 17:00 this afternoon to 23:59 tonight.

Despite no rain forecast for the city this week, a Level 1 warning suggests a medium likelihood with minor impact.

The weather service says the impact of the warning includes localised damage to temporary structures, uprooted trees and blown debris due to gusty winds.

They also suggest staying indoors if possible and not to seek shelter under trees or tall objects.

The warning comes after parts of the city experienced drizzle and thunder on Wednesday afternoon.

AccuWeather’s forecast has no rain for the city for the upcoming long weekend with warm to hot temperatures expected.

Friday’s maximum temperature will reach 33ºC with caution advised if doing strenuous activities outside, while Saturday and Sunday will reach highs of 31ºC and 29ºC respectively.
