Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning issued for Polokwane

Despite no rain forecast for today, the warning comes as an intense spring cut-off low exits the country.

POLOKWANE – The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning for Polokwane.

The warning will be in effect between 14:00 this afternoon and 20:59 this evening.

Despite no rain forecast for today, the warning comes as an intense spring cut-off low exits the country.

Cut-off lows are notorious for causing widespread severe weather such as flooding, heavy rainfall, and severe thunderstorms.

The weather service says the impact of the warning includes localised damage to informal houses (roofs) over an open area; falling of trees blocking minor roads; flying debris that might result in injury and localised flooding of susceptible roads and informal settlements

The weather service suggests seeking shelter immediately, if you are outside, and not to seek shelter under a tree, telephone or power lines, on hilltops or under unprotected gazebos or tents.
