Vhembe muni’s wastewater treatment projects to lighten load

Poor service delivery and non-functioning sewerage systems had locals fearing for the worst in recent times but the three new projects are set to change that.

LIMPOPO – Three Wastewater Treatment Works Projects (WWTW) were handed over to contractors in Musina Local Municipality by the Vhembe District Municipality recently, as another way of overcoming the backlogs within the sewerage system affecting communities in the area.

Poor service delivery and non-functioning sewerage systems had locals fearing for the worst in recent times, but on October 12, Vhembe Mayor Dowelani Nenguda accompanied by councillors handed over the projects to the Musina communities.

The projects include the refurbishment of Musina (Singelele), Nancefield, Campbell and the China Town Pump Station Wastewater Treatment Works and the contractor consultant, Fidellis Nazengura from HWA Engineers and Projects said the projects would start within 14 days from the handover date.

Completion is scheduled for June 30, 2024.

Nazengura told the media that the scope of the work includes the refurbishment of existing infrastructure components and replacing dilapidated equipment.

During the ceremony at one of the sites, Nenguda told the contractors that the district municipality will not tolerate unfinished projects, and urged the contractors to finish the projects in the time stipulated.

“We have invested over R94m in these projects for the Musina communities and we used to hear about the municipality’s challenges in terms of aged infrastructure. We want our rural communities to get clean water from the taps and better sanitation systems,” said Nenguda.

He appealed to the contractors to help create temporary employment for the local community members of Musina and surrounds during the contract period.

He also warned that oversight visits will be done to monitor the progress of the projects.
